Painted Windows
Book One of the Gunpowder Series

Trapped in a homeless, nomadic life, teenage Ruby lands in yet another random town—Gunpowder, Kentucky.  To the real world, Ruby does not exist.  Undocumented, no last name, and recording her approximate age with slash marks on her forearm, Ruby survives only with what fits in her trusty backpack. She shelters in abandoned dwellings and outbuildings, and forages for edible weeds and wild plants.  Yet, Ruby wants more than just to survive.  She seeks a normal life and an identity.  Her story captures the pursuit of one’s identity, the many struggles to find answers, and the value of second chances.  Ruby finds those in Gunpowder.  This novel depicts aspects of the human condition: being on the outside of a window looking in, separate, in the shadows, versus existing on the inside, enjoying the benefits of inclusion and belonging.

The Woodsman

A tragic accident in New York City sends Kellianne to live with her father, sawmill owner William Lee, in Ryan, Kentucky.  A loner by nature, Kellianne happily adapts to life in the rural Kentucky community.  One day on a walk in the woods to her favorite childhood tree, she has a chance and almost deadly encounter with the oddly-turned Woodsman who lives a hermit's existence in the woods.  Curiosity leads Kellianne back to the woods, and she befriends the strange man and his mule, expressing interest in learning the way forests were logged in the old days. However, her father is not pleased with the developing friendship.  Will Kellianne catch wind of the secrets that her father and step-mother are desperate to keep from her?

Fernlee

Fernlee is considered ‘odd’ by her high school peers. And she is. It shows in the way she dresses, in the way she talks, in the way she thinks—in her whole demeanor. Raised by her great Mamaw according to the old ways and the word of God, the teenage girl uniquely strives to find the ‘good’ in everyone and in everything. But when Fernlee’s safe, sheltered world is turned upside down, thrusting her into the home of strangers, her core beliefs are put to test. As Fernlee learns the rules of her new environment and confronts a future she never knew existed, can she continue to apply the principles of her ‘old’ life? Will her faith hold steady as she finds it increasingly difficult to find the ‘good’? What does Fernlee’s future hold?
